Summer Conditions and Amazing Fish!

by 19

Summer conditions, excellent conditions and amazing fish sightings are here. Winds are easing, the visibility is amazing and the big fish are back. Tarpon have arrived, sailfish are all over the reef and the hammerheads will soon follow. We have been seeing sailfish feeding right beside the boat but I have yet to be fast enough to get a good photo. We’re also seeing huge Goliath grouper, loads of black grouper, sandbar sharks, tarpon and large Cubera snapper on the USNS Vandenberg. I was able to get a great video of a 14’ Hammerhead on the wreck chasing a fisherman’s catch. One of our instructors was able to get a face-to-face visit with the shark just before it quickly retreated to the fishing boat. The gulf stream has been many miles out but the tides have been bringing in crystal clear blue water. Many days the visibility on the Vandenberg has been over 100 feet. The reefs are also seeing clean water typically around 60 feet or more. Water temps are in the low 80’s allowing most to hang up their wetsuits for the season. We’re still awaiting the return of our trade winds, but it’s already feeling like summer. Stay safe and Happy diving, we’ll see you on the water. [gallery link="file" ids="3666,3665,3664"]
