What is it About September ?
What is it About September ?!
September is our quiet time and we like it, especially after a long busy season. Some call it the forgotten season because the fishing is great but the crowds are gone. Most venues are still hitting on all cylinders, but the kids are back in school, summer vacation is over and aside from Labor Day, it’s pretty much back to the daily grind.
For me personally, I like to slow down a bit, reconnect with my friends and go have some fun fishing and diving - yes, most of us love the water - it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle we enjoy. We love showing our guests the best fishing and diving the Florida Keys have to offer. This is also the time of year we like to enjoy it ourselves so when were not entertaining clients, we are entertaining ourselves, our families and friends who often times are unable to go out on the water because we are fishing everyday.
I love lobstering. I’ve been doing it all my life. It’s the same with fishing, I can’t get enough. I’ve been truly blessed with a gift my father passed on to me - a love and respect for the environment I live in. He taught me not only to fish and dive but the value of hard work as well as the rewards that go with it.
I want to share two lessons that he taught me that I find particularly invaluable. He taught me several things that have served me well as a captain and a fisherman.
#1 Don’t leave good fishing to find it! #2 Never approach the dock any faster than you want to hit it!
That’s some good advice, thank you Dad!
September has it’s share of seasoned veterans. The clients who avoid lobster mini-season and opening week like the plague.
You may not know this but we catch lobster all the way into December with or with out tanks.
Spearfishing is great for grouper, hogfish, and a variety of snapper. The fishing is still very good for dolphin, snapper, grouper, sharks and more. September and October have been a well kept secret until now. I’ve been blessed with a life many envy.
Believe me when I tell you what you experience is the icing on the cake. The cake takes a lot of work from bait fishing for hours before and after every charter to repairing essential and non essential equipment - often times late into the night to ensure the next day’s trip is the best you can provide for your clients - often times at the expense of your family who joke about hiring you for the day so they can spend some time with you.
Well September is finally here and we have the weather and the time, so let’s get together and enjoy our paradise. Like I said, I’ve been blessed in more ways than one. I know some of the best fishermen and women in the world. Some of which you will find in this magazine, others you’ll find at their docks in these islands. I have the best family a man could ever want from an understanding significant other; a daughter who knows she gets her dad back in October for a month or so; and my clients, many of whom I’ve fished with for decades and have become close friends. Thank you all for making my life complete.
Welcome to September, Let’s go catching !!!
